Throughout the chapter the author mentions that the goal of VR is that it becomes so transparent that the medium disappears. The more transparent the medium, the more real it becomes. The author also refers to the fact that many of the VR systems require the user to wear bulky helmets. With that equipment the VR is not very transparent. Different VR systems, where the user is surrounded by large computer screens makes it much more transparent, but as someone pointed out in class, can the medium ever disappear if the user is always aware that they are stepping or plugging in to the medium?

yeah, awareness of the VR experience creates a kind of never-invisible medium, doesn't it. So in order to experience real VR, it would have to be Matrix style.
